SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616)
Julius Caesar. A Tragedy As it is Now Acted at the Theatre Royal. London: H. H[ills]. Jun. for Hen. Heringman and R. Bentley, sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders, 1684.
First quarto edition and first separate edition. Written c. 1599, Julius Casear first appeared in the First Folio of 1623, but no quarto edition is known before the present one of 1684, likely printed in response to the play’s popularity following Betterton’s stage revival in 1682. The present edition gives the cast list of the Theatre Royal production, with Betterton as Judas. This accompanied general interest in the great Shakespeare tragedies, with several editions of Hamlet and Othello also appearing between 1676 and 1709 (Bartlett, p.47). Arber II, 64; Bartlett 112; Jaggard p.319 (erroneously citing a 1680 ghost); Wing S2922; ESTC R15574.

Quarto (214 x 152mm). Without initial blank leaf (a few headlines shaved and one repaired, minor small stains, minor repairs on title). 20th-century burgundy crushed morocco by Riviere and Son, upper cover and spine lettered in gilt, gilt edges (joints discreetly repaired); later red morocco-backed folding box. Provenance: Ro. Mylne (18th-century title inscription) – [Bonham’s NY, 8 July, 2020, lot 85].
