SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616)
A collection of poems, in two volumes; being all the miscellanies of Mr. William Shakespeare, which were publish'd by himself in the year 1609. London: for Bernard Lintott, [1709-10].
First edition, third issue, of the first collection of Shakespeare's poems to include ‘Venus and Adonis’ and ‘The Rape of Lucrece’, and (in the second and third issue, as here) enlarged with 54 additional sonnets. The Lintott editions are noted for their careful printing, with a minimum of emendation. ‘Whatever motives – whatever conscious editorial principles – lay behind this edition, the texts gave the poems to the public in a form little altered from the first editions’ (Dawson). The third Lintott issue is characterised by the part-titles dated 1609 and with no general title to volume two. Cf. Giles E. Dawson, Four Centuries of Shakespeare Publication, 1964. H.L. Ford, Shakespeare 1700-1740, 1935, pp. 37-39; ESTC T138086.

Octavo (173 x 103mm). ‘To the only begetter’ leaf (i.e. second leaf of vol. 2) misbound before p.147 (some browning and spotting). Modern panelled calf. Provenance: ‘Dear Ni[c]k 1912’ (inscription on title title).
