Lot Essay
Similar scroll pattern incorporating circular ‘eyes’ and rolled snouts suggestive of dragon heads can be found on two jade beads dated Eastern Zhou dynasty, 6th-5th century BC, sold in Fine Chinese Art from the Arthur M. Sackler Collection; Christie’s New York, 18 March 2009, lot 313. Another similar jade bead is illustrated by Bo Zhongmo in Guyu Jingying (The Art of Jade Carving in Ancient China), Taiwan, 1989-90, p. 105, no. 36, where it is compared to a similar bead excavated from a Spring and Autumn tomb in Henan province.
