In 1981, Liu Dan relocated to Honolulu, where he met Clarence Koon Hon Yee, a respected member of the local Chinese community. Yee quickly developed a close friendship with Liu Dan, frequently visiting his studio or dining together. During the period when Liu created his first Dictionary, Yee was a regular visitor to the studio and became one of Liu Dan’s closest friends during his time in Hawaii. The present works have remained in the family collection since.
