GASPARE DIZIANI, THE ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERDS, RED CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, FRAGMENTARY WATERMARK

The composition is similar to another Adoration of the Shepherds, drawn in pen and ink, of similar dimensions, at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, which also features the wheel as a repoussoir figure in the foreground and the angel with large wings dominating the main scene (inv. 24053). Three paintings on the same subject are preserved: in the Church of the Assunta in Clusone (province of Bergamo), at Wesleyan College in Macon (Georgia), dated 1754 and 1755 respectively ; (A.P. Zugni-Tauro, Gaspare Diziani, Milan, no. 173, 155) and a third, previously in the church of S. Stin in Venice and now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest (Garas, op. cit., p. 82, fig. 64).

La composition est à rapprocher d’une autre Adoration des Bergers dessinée, de dimensions proches, uniquement à la plume, et conservée à l’Albertina Museum de Vienne, qui reprend la roue comme figure repoussoir au premier plan et l’ange aux grandes ailes qui vole au-dessus de la scène principale (inv. 24053). Trois tableaux de même sujet sont conservés : dans l’église dell ‘Assunta de Clusone (province de Bergame), au Wesleyan college de Macon Géorgie, datés respectivement de 1754 et 1755; A.P. Zugni-Tauro, Gaspare Diziani, Milan, n° 173, 155) puis un dernier, auparavant dans l’église S. Stin de Venise et aujourd’hui au musée des beaux-arts de Budapest (Garas, op. cit., p. 82, fig. 64).
