MAURO GANDOLFI, STUDY OF SEVEN HEADS, PEN AND BROWN INK

This study of seven grouped heads is a fine example of the artist's ‘pictorial heads’ (teste pittoriche), a composition created by the Bolognese artist Gaetano Gandolfi (1734-1802) and continued with great success by his son Mauro, as seen here. The methodical use of tight hatching is reminiscent of the technique of engraving. Another similar example is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. 1975.1.325).

Cette étude de sept têtes regroupées est un bel exemple des ‘têtes picturales’ (teste pittoriche) de l'artiste, une composition créée par l'artiste bolognais Gaetano Gandolfi (1734-1802) et que son fils Mauro a poursuivi avec un grand succès comme ici. Le système des hachures resserrées avec méthode rappelle la technique de la gravure. Un autre exemple similaire est conservé au Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York (inv. 1975.1.325).
