Lot Essay

This composition relates to another intimately-scaled panel, published by Peter Humfrey as a workshop picture (see P. Humfrey, Cima Da Conegliano, Cambridge, 1983, p. 172, no. 189, pl. 68b). A third panel of the same composition, and of similar dimensions, attributed to Cima, appeared at auction in Zurich in 1995 (Koller Auktionen AG, 3 November 1995, lot 3015).
