terracotta, signed and dated at the back "houdon f 1778", on a bleu turquin marble base, the circular black marble socle later
and inscribed: "M.F. AROUET / DE VOLT AIRE / BUSTE DONNÉ PAR LUI. MÊME/ AU MAL PRINCE DE BEAUVAU"
12 ¾ in. (32,5 cm) high; 17 1⁄3 in. (44 cm) high, overall
54,5 cm (21 ½ in.) high, overall with the counter base
Provenance
Gift from François Marie Arouet, called Voltaire (1694-1778) to Charles Juste de Beauvau-Craon, 2nd Prince of Beauvau and Marquis of Haroué, Marshal of France (1720-1793),
then by descent to his daughter, Anne Louise Marie de Beauvau-Craon, princesse de Poix (1750-1834) wife of Philippe Louis de Noailles, vicomte de Lautrec and prince de Poix (1752-1819),
by descent to the present owner.
