Lot Essay

The present bowl is with deep, rounded sides carved on the exterior with a linear woven pattern, all under a luscious glaze of deep olive-green tone.

This motif, reminiscent of basket-weave, first appeared in metal wares of the Tang dynasty and grew into a widely celebrated decorative pattern. Compare an agate double-handled cup with similar design on the body, Liao dynasty, in the collection of Palace Museum, Taipei, collection no.: guza000376N (fig. 1). This design was subsequently adapted into ceramics; for a related Yaozhou bowl of Northern Song dynasty, see an example in the Shaanxi Archaeology Museum. A closely related Yaozho example was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 6 October 2015, lot 109.
