Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) shared a close friendship with Yu Youren (1879-1964) and longstanding ties with the Zhang family, later related to the Yu family by marriage. Zhang Chengji’s (1920-1988) father, Zhang Dulun (1894-1958), was a prominent Republican-era official who served in Sichuan and Xikang during the Second Sino-Japanese War. While in Sichuan, Zhang Daqian was already acquainted with Zhang Dulun and his wife, Shen Shouzhen. In 1948, Zhang Chengji married Yu Youren’s daughter, Yu Nianci, formally linking the two families by marriage. The three paintings of the collection were respectively dedicated to Shen Shouzhen, Zhang Chengji ,and Yu Nianci. Spanning two generations, they trace Zhang Daqian’s ties with both families and preserve a rare record of family provenance.

Lot Essay

The recipient, addressed as “Xiangxiang”, is Yu Nianci, the youngest daughter of Yu Youren (1879-1964). In 1948, she married the Buddhist scholar Zhang Chengji (1920-1988) in Hankou shortly after his return from lecturing in India. The following year, she accompanied her husband to India, before the couple relocated to the United States in 1951.
