Patek Philippe is renowned for the extraordinary range of accessories it produced during the 1970s, yet few are as rare or coveted today as the Golden Ellipse lighters. Far more than simple accessories, these luxurious objects were priced above some of the manufacture’s entry-level wristwatches at the time and were offered in a variety of precious metals with an array of elaborate decorative motifs. With an estimated total production of fewer than 200 pieces, of which fewer than a fifth are known today, surviving examples are exceptionally rare.
The present Golden Ellipse lighter, reference 9504, is crafted from 18k yellow gold and distinguished by its beautifully executed ‘Ocean’ motif. The intricate decoration was created by a master artisan using a traditional rose-engine lathe, a demanding technique requiring exceptional precision and control, as even the slightest error during the engraving process could compromise the entire design. Substantial in both weight and proportions, the lighter has the unmistakable presence of an object crafted entirely in precious metal.
