Lot Essay

Christophe Claret stands among the pioneers of contemporary independent watchmaking, renowned for his inventive approach to some of horology's most demanding complications, particularly the minute repeater. Having begun his career restoring antique and vintage timepieces, Claret graduated from the prestigious Geneva Watchmaking School before the age of 20 and subsequently worked alongside master watchmaker Roger Dubuis. A decisive moment came at the Basel Watch Fair in 1987, when Rolf Schnyder, who had recently acquired Ulysse Nardin, commissioned the young watchmaker to produce 20 minute repeater movements, launching a career devoted to highly complicated mechanical watchmaking.

Claret established his specialist atelier in 1989, becoming one of the pioneers of the modern independent movement. Part of the Christophe Claret Art Piece collection, the Adagio perfectly embodies the uncompromising technical and artistic philosophy that has established his reputation. The present timepiece is rendered all the more exceptional by its status as a unique piece, a fact confirmed by the engraving on the caseback. Conceived as a musical masterpiece and inspired by the decorative arts of the Renaissance, the watch combines formidable mechanical complexity with exceptional craftsmanship. Its commanding case is richly embellished with intricate hand engraving extending around the caseband, lugs, minute repeater slider and pushers, transforming the exterior into a work of decorative art.

Beneath the sapphire crystal, the dial is fashioned from a single piece of deep black onyx, providing a dramatic backdrop for the multiple indications. Alongside the white gold hour and minute hands, large apertures cut directly into the stone reveal the oversized date at 6 o'clock and the rotating small-seconds disc at 9 o'clock. A subsidiary display indicates a second time zone together with a day/night indication, resulting in an unusually complex yet remarkably legible arrangement.

The sophisticated functionality continues through the caseband. Two pushers positioned on either side of the crown allow independent adjustment of the second time zone and date, while the distinctive slider on the opposite side activates the watch's most impressive complication: the minute repeater. On demand, the mechanism sounds the hours, quarter-hours and minutes through hammers striking cathedral gongs, whose extended construction produces a rich and resonant tone. The intricate chiming mechanism can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback, providing a spectacular view of the mechanical architecture within.
