Maximilian Büsser has established MB&F as one of the defining names of contemporary independent watchmaking, renowned for creations that challenge conventional ideas of both mechanical construction and design. Among the manufacture's most celebrated creations, the Legacy Machine collection takes a different approach from MB&F's more futuristic Horological Machines, imagining what the brand's watches might have looked like had it existed during the golden age of traditional watchmaking. Drawing inspiration from masters such as Abraham-Louis Breguet, Ferdinand Berthoud and Antide Janvier, the collection combines classical horological principles with MB&F's unmistakably unconventional approach.
Introduced in 2013, the Legacy Machine No. 2 explores the historic pursuit of greater chronometric precision through multiple regulators. Two independent escapements, each with its own spectacular 11 mm 'flying' balance wheel, operate simultaneously and are connected through a sophisticated planetary differential visible on the lower part of the dial. This mechanism averages the rates of the two independent regulators before transmitting a single regulated rate to the movement, creating a fascinating contemporary interpretation of centuries-old horological experimentation.
Visually, the twin balances dominate the architecture of the watch, appearing to float above the dial beneath two beautifully curved, mirror-polished double-arc bridges. An oversized domed sapphire crystal rises dramatically above the case, providing the necessary space for this three-dimensional construction while offering an unobstructed view of the constantly moving regulators.
The manually wound movement was developed specifically for the Legacy Machine No. 2 by Jean-François Mojon at Chronode and his team in collaboration with MB&F, while its traditional aesthetic and exceptional hand-finishing were overseen by master watchmaker Kari Voutilainen.
