Lot Essay

The Time for Speed collection celebrates Tiffany & Co.’s longstanding heritage in both Swiss watchmaking and the creation of prestigious racing trophies. Inspired by the streamlined forms of 1950s racing cars, the present clock is sculpted from aluminium and finished in the House’s unmistakable Tiffany Blue automotive paint, creating a playful yet highly sophisticated interpretation of mechanical timekeeping.

Its automotive inspiration extends throughout the design. Rubber tyres are fitted with polished stainless steel spokes and rims, while a brushed stainless steel aperture on the left side of the car displays the time through rotating hour and minute discs. The Tiffany & Co. emblem adorns the radiator-style grille, while the number ‘57’ on the bumper pays subtle tribute to the House’s celebrated Fifth Avenue flagship, The Landmark, located at the corner of 57th Street. Above the driver’s seat, a helmet-shaped glass dome reveals the escapement and balance wheel, providing a captivating view of the mechanism in motion.

Powering the clock is a manually wound mechanical movement developed by renowned Swiss clockmaker L’Épée 1839, providing an impressive eight-day power reserve. The interaction with the mechanism is ingeniously integrated into the automotive theme: the steering wheel is turned counterclockwise to set the time, while pulling the car backwards across a flat surface winds the movement.
