Introduced in 1921, the Tank Cintrée, ‘cintrée’ meaning ‘curved’ in French, is widely regarded as one of the most elegant interpretations of Cartier’s celebrated Tank design. Its elongated, gently curved case was conceived to follow the natural contour of the wrist, combining remarkable comfort with an unmistakable silhouette. Produced in comparatively small quantities throughout its history, the Tank Cintrée has become one of the most coveted models among collectors of vintage Cartier.
During the 1990s, Cartier revisited the iconic design with an unusual and highly practical complication: the Tank Cintrée Dual-Time. Incorporating two independent mechanical movements within a single case, each adjusted through its own faceted crown, the model allows two different time zones to be displayed simultaneously while preserving the elegant proportions of the original Cintrée.
The present example is beautifully rendered in 18k yellow gold and features an attractive ivory-coloured split dial. Two separate displays are arranged vertically, the upper retaining Cartier’s classical configuration of twelve Roman numerals, while the lower indication is deliberately simplified with Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9, allowing the second time zone to be immediately distinguished.
Completing the design are the Tank Cintrée’s characteristically elongated case sides and curved caseback, together with two faceted octagonal crowns set with sapphire cabochons. Elegant yet unconventional, the Tank Cintrée Dual-Time combines one of Cartier’s most distinctive case designs with an ingenious and practical interpretation of dual-time watchmaking.
