Lot Essay
Standing at the summit of the Lange 1 collection, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar combines two of A. Lange & Söhne's most sophisticated complications while preserving the distinctive asymmetrical design of the original Lange 1. In 2019, the model was selected as the fourth instalment of the manufacture's '25th Anniversary' series, produced in only 25 examples in white gold and offered exclusively through A. Lange & Söhne boutiques.
The familiar Lange 1 dial architecture presented the manufacture with a particular challenge when developing the perpetual calendar. Rather than disrupting its carefully established proportions with a conventional month indication, Lange's engineers devised an ingenious peripheral month ring surrounding the dial. This solution required an entirely new switching mechanism: instead of relying upon a traditional programme wheel to distinguish between months of different lengths, the calendar reads this information directly from twelve recesses of varying depth concealed beneath the month ring. A lever follows their contours, determining when the mechanism must advance to the following month. In this way, the calendar automatically accounts for months of 30 and 31 days, February and leap years.
Powering these indications is the self-winding calibre L082.1, which brings together the perpetual calendar and tourbillon within a remarkably coherent construction. While the tourbillon remains deliberately concealed from the dial side so as not to disturb the characteristic Lange 1 display, its rotating cage can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback. The movement furthermore incorporates Lange's stop-tourbillon mechanism, allowing the balance inside the tourbillon cage to be brought to a halt for precise setting of the time.
For the anniversary edition, the watch is housed in white gold and paired with an argenté-coloured solid silver dial, enlivened by the deep blue details shared across the commemorative collection. Special movement decoration further distinguishes the edition, creating a direct visual connection between the dial and the exceptional finishing visible through the caseback.
