Featuring Cédric Johner’s now-iconic, handmade, soft-tonneau-shaped ‘Abyss’ case, together with his renowned hand-finishing, this stunning unique model, created especially for Watches for ELA, features an inky-black, hand-lacquered and polished dial, an aesthetic colour combination that is hard to beat. The manual-winding mechanical movement by Tavannes has been rose-gilded and hand-engraved in the Cédric Johner atelier with sinuous decoration representing neurons of the brain.
Cédric Johner is a highly revered independent Swiss master watchmaker and jeweller known for his completely handcrafted, ‘intuitive’ approach to haute horlogerie. Operating from a small workshop in Carouge, near Geneva, Johner designs and creates highly exclusive watches one at a time, without the use of computer assistance or CNC machines.
Johner established his eponymous brand in 1997 and debuted his work at Baselworld. He introduced his flagship model, the Abyss, featuring a highly distinctive, hand-sculpted, hexagonal ‘soft-tonneau’ shape. The iconic silhouette remains his signature trademark. His meticulous, high-grade finishing earned his early creations the prestigious Geneva Seal (Poinçon de Genève).
Johner works entirely without digital design tools. He crafts case shapes from raw blocks of metal, manually manipulates components, and reworks vintage movements by hand. His annual production is strictly confidential and limited, often comprising fewer than 30 pieces a year, and consists of bespoke orders, unique custom pieces, or small themed runs for collectors.
