Lot Essay

The present pair of huanghuali horseshoe-back armchairs is distinguished by the graceful sweep of the arms and the dramatically curved ‘S-shaped’ splats finely carved with pairs of chilong. The chairs are further decorated with cusped aprons carved with interlocking scroll below the seat. A pair of huanghuali horseshoe-back armchairs with similar carving on the back splats and more pronounced terminals was sold at Christie’s New York, 24 March 2023, lot 1137.
