Lot Essay

Celebrated as one of Rolex's most extravagant design, the Queen Midas, so-called because of its tribute to the mythological king whose left hand possessed the golden touch, is an asymmetrical gold bracelet watch representing a decisive artistic departure and milestone in the brand's history. Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta and released in the late 1960s as the diminutive counterpart to the King Midas, the watch was crafted entirely from solid 18k gold blocks. To guarantee absolute fidelity to the original concept, the Queen Midas was designed specifically for left-handed clients and intended to be worn on the right wrist, a deliberate homage to the legend of King Midas whose left hand was said to hold the golden touch. Inspired by Greek mythology, the watch takes its name from the tragic king who wished that everything he touched would turn to gold, only to realize his fortune was a curse when his own daughter turned into a lifeless statue. Today, the Queen Midas remains highly sought after by collectors for its rarity and its unique place as a symbol of 1970s extravagance and Genta's enduring genius.
