Lot Essay

Although the maker's mark on the present box is not clearly legible, it may be attributed to Louis Picasse, as the box is closely comparable in both style and design to another box marked for Louis Picasse, dated 1747, sold in The British Rail Pension Fund; Sotheby's, Geneva, 15 May 1990, lot 22.

Louis Picasse was made a master in Paris in 1745, benefiting from the privileges accorded to him from his training at the Gobelins Manufactory. He registered his mark under the sponsorship of Michel Robert Hallé. He appears to have maintained a particularly active workshop, which may account for the frequently imperfect hallmarking encountered on his work. Indeed, on 26 February 1750 he was fined for possessing in his workshop an unmarked garniture de boîtes à mouches (see Nocq, 1926, III, p. 326).

For another lot by Louis Picasse, see lot 29 in Part I of the collection.
