Lot Essay

Several American daguerreotypists travelled through Brazil in the 1840s and 1850s including Augustus Morand who photographed the Emperor and his family in 1842. The presentation of this portrait and case is typical of American work of the period and as Emperor Dom Pedro II did not travel to New York until the 1870s it seems likely this portrait would have been made by an American photographer in Rio de Janeiro.
