An unusual Victorian rosewood four-glass striking mantel clock with music on the quarters, circa 1850
The case of typical form with glazed panel to the stepped top, with moulded base on later bun feet, with leaf engraved border to the gilt engine-turned dial with Roman chapter ring, blued moon hands, signed PAYNE 163 NEW BOND SR.T and inscribed PATENT, the twin chain fusee movement with anchor escapement, hour strike on gong and music on the quarters on eight steel combs via a 1½in. (3.5cm.) pinned cylinder, pendulum holdfast to the backplate with repeat signature -- 10in. (25.5cm.) high
