Lot Essay

Holcroft died on 23rd March, 1809. The task of completing the memoirs, which the dying author had begun to dictate only three weeks earlier, was given to Hazlitt by William Godwin, and was all the more urgent since Holcroft left his wife and six children virtually penniless.
