Lot Essay

A set of essays written under the stimulus of Edmund Kean and dedicated to Charles Lamb, Characters of Shakespeare's Plays was severely attacked in the Quarterly Review and in Blackwood's Magazine, Hazlitt's democratic views making him obnoxious to both journals. His Letter to William Gifford was a cutting reply to the editor of the former.
