A VERY RARE PAIR OF CANTON ENAMEL GARDEN SEATS
18TH CENTURY

Each of quatrefoil section, finely enamelled to the rounded sides and flat top with an elegant floral scroll bearing multi-coloured stylized blooms reserved on a gilt diaper ground, each lobed side with shaped panels framed by pairs of pink bats and blue dragons to reveal a gu-shaped central column decorated with further floral scrolls, the waisted neck with borders of archaistic dragons, key-fret and bats in flight amid clouds, all supported on four gilt bracket feet (surface crackled in places, minor losses and repairs)--19 1/4in. These unusual garden stools appear to be unique and no similar examples have been published.

The quality of the enamelling can be compared to a very finely painted Canton enamel box dating to the Qianlong period, illustrated in Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, no. 49 and on the cover
