Lot Essay

Paul Delaroche (d.1856), was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1832. He began to work on L'Hemicycle, also known as the Artist of all Ages, for the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1837 and completed it in 1841. Renowned as being his most famous work, this monumental panorama, 27 meters wide, depicts over seventy painters, sculptors and architects, ranging from antiquity to the 18th Century; among them are Raphael, Leonardo and Inigo Jones.
