Lot Essay

The present lot is characteristic of late 18th century classicist taste introduced by Gerard de Lairesse's Groote Schilderboeck of 1707. As pointed by E. Koolhass-Grosfeld, "Van de Tuin naar de Wildernis" in Langs Velden en Wegen, exh. cat., 1998, pp.51/4, De Lairesse advised painters to develop ideal rather than realistic landscapes, in which light effects and staffage would underline the atmosphere.
