Lot Essay

As pointed out by T. Beherman, op.cit., p.327, the present lot was thought by C. Hofstede de Groot, using as evidence the Randon de Boisset Sale, to be the pendant to the picture of the musiclesson in the National Gallery, London (T. Beherman, op.cit., p.243, with ill.). However, this sale did not include either pictures by Schalcken.
