Lot Essay

For the attribution compare the picture recorded on the Munich art market,1970 ( W. Bernt, The Netherlandish Painters of the Seventeenth Century, 1969, III, plate 1269). Typical for the artist who was a native of Dordrecht and who was probably a pupil of Gerard Dou in Leyden, are the delicate gradations of tone and the soft elegant handling.
The subject was probably inspired by Jan van de Velde's etching (Holl. 154), inscribed with the motto: In weelden sijn wij dickwils geseten/de Doot veel naerder dan wy weeten (E. de Jongh, G. Luyten, Spiegel van Alledag, exh. cat., Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, 1997, p.156, no28, with ill.).
