A SWEDISH ADOLF FREDRICK GILTWOOD MIRROR

The later divided shaped-arched bevelled rectangular plate in a mirrored border with the remains of painted flowers, below a pierced C-scroll and rockwork cresting with flowers hung on each side, the sides of the mirror with clasping acanthus, with a pierced C-scroll and rockwork apron, with remains of two paper labels to the reverse indistinctly inscribed in ink, with ink guild stamp of a crowned portrait bust surrounded by 'STOCKHOLM HALL STÄMPEL 1769', restorations, six border plates cracked, losses to the cresting

Lot Essay

This mirror bears the specialist mirror-maker's guild brand to the reverse. This brand together with the year was employed on every Swedish mirror sold on the open market that had passed the guild's quality controls.

A similar, larger Adolf Fredrick mirror bearing the guild stamp for 1765 was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 30 October 1997, lot 75.
