Lot Essay

A Genoese side table with polychrome Chinoiserie decoration, of closely related design is in the collection of A. De Castro, Rome (S. Colombo, L'Arte del Legno e del Mobile in Italia, Turin, 1981, fig. 419), while a pair of side tables with closely related legs from the collection of the 6th Earl of Rosebery, Mentmore, Buckinghamshire, was sold Sotheby's house sale, 18-20 May 1977, lot 847.

A gilding analysis undertaken by University College, London has revealed that there is no further decoration beneath the present gilding and it is therefore almost certain that the present decoration is original.
