JEAN BAPTISTE BOURGUIGNON D'ANVILLE (1697-1782)

Nouvel atlas de la Chine, de la Tartarie Chinoise, et du Thibet...Carte du Royaume de Corée. The Hague: H. Scheurleer, 1737. 2° (53 x 36cm). Title printed in red and black, 2pp advertisement, 8pp text. 42 engraved maps of China, Tibet, Tartary and Korea (12 folding, cut without loss along the folds, and rejoined and strenghtened on the verso using linen strips; three of the folding maps hand-coloured in outline). (Title somewhat soiled and with repairs to margins, small repairs to A2 and B1.) Contemporary half russia, early manuscript title label on upper cover (neatly rebacked and cornered).
D'Anville, Royal Geographer and Cartographer, compiled this interesting atlas of China to accompany editions of du Halde's work on China. Unlike the earlier mapping of China by Blaeu, this work also includes quite 'detailed' maps of Tibet, Tartary and Korea, as well as the first publication of Bering's map of Northern Siberia. A Paris edition was published in the same year, and a later edition was published in 1785 in Amsterdam by B.Vlam. Nordenskiold I.5; Phillips Atlases 3189.
