Lot Essay

Across from the Piazzetta at the entrance to the Grand Canal, stands the Dogana, or customs house, surmounted by Bernardo Falcone's statue of Fortune, supported by two crouching Atlantes. Next to it runs the Seminario, beside Baldessare Longehna's masterpiece of Venetian Baroque, the church of Santa Maria della Salute.
Edward Angelo Goodall executed many views of Venice, but also travelled in Morocco, Spain and Portugal, and recorded events in the Crimea for the Illustrated London News in 1854. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1881 and 1884, at the British Institution, at the Royal Society of British Artists, and also at the Old Watercolour Society. Christie's London held his studio sale on 30 November 1908.
