A Meissen group of a shepherd and shepherdess
Circa 1760, blue crossed swords mark
Modelled after Boucher, with a shepherd leaning forward to garland his companion with flowers, he in a turquoise gilt-edged cloak, striped flowered shirt and breeches, seated on a rock applied with foliage, she wearing a puce dress and shoes enriched with gilding, with two recumbent sheep at her feet, on a kidney-shaped mound base edged with gilt scrolls and applied with coloured flowers and foliage (restoration to hat, cloak and her left forearm, very minor and minute chipping to extremities), on a later gilt gesso kidney-shaped base

Lot Essay

The subject is derived from the drawing 'the listener at the well' by Franois Boucher. Cf. Rainer Rckert, op. cit. (1966), fig. 1023 and the example sold in these Rooms on 9 April 1979, lot 147, and a further example with the subsidiary architectural section sold in these Rooms on 11 October 1976, lot 143.
