Three plans and 24 small views of Rome, surrounded on three sides by portraits of popes and emperors, the sea decorated with galleons and sea monsters, scalebar surmounted by dividers. (Trimmed to image, strengthened at two folds on verso, some light discolouration, one corner neatly repaired.)
A very fine and impressive work. The three maps show ancient Rome, modern Rome, and its environs, the latter with considerable topographical detail and peopled with soldiers and travellers. Below the maps the 24 vedute show the principal buildings and monuments in the city, and surrounding the maps and views to left and right are two columns of 238 bust-length portraits of popes, and below are 136 bust-length portraits of emperors. The portaits of popes follow that of Christ and end with Paul V, Camillo Borghese (elected 16 may 1606, died 28 January 1620). The portraits of the emperors begin with Julius Caesar and the Roman Emperors and end with the Holy Roman Emperor, Matthew (Habsburg, crowned 14 June 1611, died 20 March 1619). It is between these dates that the map can be dated.
