Lot Essay

This is one of a series of military sketches made by the artist after he travelled to India in 1857. He accompanied Lord Clyde in the campaign of Oudh, following the relief of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. His work found much favour with the Royal Family: he was commissioned by Queen Victoria to record the wedding of the Princess Royal to Prince Frederick William of Prussia in January 1858, and sketches from his stay at Balmoral in September 1859 remain in the Royal Collection at Windsor.
