A LACQUER INCENSE CABINET (KODANSU)
edo-meiji periods (mid-late 19th century)
Raised on four bracket feet, the small rectangular cabinet fitted with two doors enclosing seven drawers of varying size, decorated on the exterior in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, togidashi and okibirame on a kinji ground with motifs alluding to the Hatsune ("The First Warbler") chapter of Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the cover with seedling pine and two woven baskets on the veranda of Genji's Rokujo mansion, the sides illustrated with a small stream running through the surrounding garden of pine, plum and woven bamboo fences, the faces of the drawers decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a kinji ground with sprays of pine and flowering plum, the interior of the drawers, base and interior of the doors of the cabinet nashiji, fitted with silver hinges and latch incised with foliate scroll and silver drawer pulls
