A SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY FIGURE OF A HORSE AND A GROOM
Tang Dynasty
Shown standing foursquare on a rectangular base and covered with a pale amber glaze, the saddle cloth splash-glazed in amber, green and cream contrasted against an amber saddle blanket with green border, the neck grooved for insertion of a mane and the rump with a hole for the tail; the foreign groom standing with right hand raised in a fist, wearing a green coat with split skirt and amber collar over cream-glazed pants, his face modeled with broad nose and full lips and painted in black with a mustache, his hair worn in a braid across the back of his head
