Lot Essay

American innovation ruled in 1928, when Nina designed by Starling Burgess, 59 feet overall with a beam of 10 feet, won the Spanish Queen's Transatlantic Cup and the Fastnet Race in quick succession. Entering as a schooner but being dubbed a 'two masted cutter' in technical terms, she went on to win many races throughout her long career and won the Bermuda race outright at the ripe old age of 34.

Here Nina had a chance meeting with the Royal Yacht Britannia in the summer of 1928.
