One bifolium, brown ink on paper, folio, 440 x 290 mm, text on first recto, semi-cursive Ashkenazic hand, three folds, good condition -- HEBREW LETTER - Autograph letter addressed to Moses Montefiore, signed [...] Lichtstein of Shzoozin, dated 1851 (?), 1 bifolium, folded (written on 3 of 4 sides), entails a request for Montefiore to influence the Czar of Russia to remove taxes which formerly exempted Jews from military service, with additional request for relief from other imposed burdens, such as restrictions confining Jews to the Pale of Settlement, and collective punishment for individual commercial offenses -- HEBREW LETTER - Handwritten letter, dated 1836, addressed to Moses Montefiore, signed the Rabbi and Moreh Tsedek of Nieswiez, now Nesvizh (Belorussia), 1 bifolium, brown ink on somewhat brittle paper, 270 x 200 mm., text on first leaf, one fold. A plea for two young Jews who were sentenced for transferring merchandise from Grodno without paying taxes. All their property was confiscated and they were fined 498 rubles. Because they were unable to pay debt, they were punished with a lifetime of military service. Kaufmann. 3) Huradna, c. 1846, requesting help in order to improve on the life conditions of the Jews of Lita, signed by A. Kaufmann. 4) Kovno, 11 Iyyar 1846, regarding promise for governmental distribution of lands for agricultural purposes, signed by 4 representatives of 30 families. 5) Milbel, 12 Iyyar 1846, requesting financial aid, signed by Isaac ben Abraham Katz. 6) Rassin, 22 Iyyar 1846, requesting to try to cancel the order of the Russian government to forbid Jews to settle within 50 miles of the Austrian and Prussian border.
