Having spent over eighteen years in Africa, the artist was familiar with the importance of these long exchanges of words and the use of proverbs. The scene probably takes place in the region between Katiola and Ferkessé-Dougou, in the Ivory Coast, where the huts and millet granaries were decorated with geometric designs.
