Rectangular box with cut corners, the cover chased and engraved with floral scrolls, engine-turned reeding and two sea-monsters in the lower corners, the base similarly decorated and with a sunburst motif in guilloché in the central reserve, the sides with horizontal engine-turned panels, the corners chased with leaves

Lot Essay

It is possible that the maker's mark "EM" corresponds to that of Elias Montoison, a Viennese watch-case maker who invented an engine-turning machine in 1829 (see Waltraud Neuwirth, Wiener Silber 1780-1866, Vienna, 1988, I, pp. 174-205).
