Rectangular patch box opening on cover and base with inverted hinges, the cover, sides and base set with red lacquer panels, lid and base centred by oval black and gold lacquer panels painted with flowers in the Japanese manner, within gold frames chased with stylized acanthus, the outer gold mounts engraved with flower swags on reeded bands, the insides of both lids inset with mirrors, all compartments in gold lacquer in the Japanese style, the upper inside with a compartment for the red composition gum-brush and another compartment with hinged lid for the gum, the base with flat compartment for patches
