A Swiss enamelled gold Boîte-À-Surprise
probably Geneva, circa 1840
Rectangular box with concave front and rear sides, all over engraved with rocaille, scrolling foliage and flowers enamelled in translucent green, blue, orange, and yellow on a polished gold ground, both left and right hand sides opening to reveal a vinaigrette compartment with hinged openwork grille on the left, and on the right a compartment containing a lever releasing a secret mechanism opening the lid of another compartment hidden in the base
