WITH GLAZED IMPRESSION-LINED TOP
The circular glazed top with gadrooned border enclosing a gold embossed green velvet-lined surface with a geometrical arrangment of intaglio impressions of classical portrait busts, above a fluted frieze with a rectangular slide, on a ring-turned and fluted column flanked by three channelled scrolls headed by foliage, on a concave-sided tripartite base wtih egg-and-dart moulding, on scroll feet and part-sunk brass castors, inscribed in chalk to the underside 'the slide here', with circlar paper label faintly inscribed '2307'; and a piece of paper inscribed in ink with the names of the portrait busts
30 in. (76 cm.) high; 30¼ in. (77 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The pierced scroll tripod of the base probably derives ultimately from a design for a 'dejuné' table in George Smith, A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, pl. 82. A variation with central fluted column was published by J. Taylor, in The Upholsterer's and Cabinet-Maker's Pocket Assistant, 1850, reproduced in E.T. Joy, ed., Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1977, p. 500.
