A MEISSEN ORMOLU-MOUNTED EQUESTRIAN FIGURE
CIRCA 1745-50
Modelled by J.J. Kändler, astride a rearing piebald stallion, his hair tied in a black bow, wearing a black hat and boots, a puce-lined yellow frock-coat, blue jacket and pink breeches, holding a baton, the stallion with a turquoise gilt-edged saddle-cloth, supported by a tree-stump on an oval base applied with trailing coloured flowers and foliage, the cast ormolu base with foliage and scrolls (restoration to horse's tail, ears and front legs, some minor chipping and restoration to extremities)

Lot Essay

This figure is related to the figure of Empress Elisabeth of Russia with a moor attendant modelled in circa 1750, which is modelled to the left, see the Exhibition Catalogue Frühes Meissener Porzellan, Kostbarkeiten aus deutschen Privatsammlungen, Hetjens-Museums, Düsseldorf and Zwinger, Dresden, January - July 1997, Munich, 1997, pp. 256-257, no. 212 for the group which was formerly in the von Pannwitz Collection. The von Pannwitz group was sold by Helbing, Munich, on 24-25 October 1905, lot 375, pl. LXXXVI, and at the time it was described as being a portrait of Augustus III. Another example, without the figure of the moor, is illustrated by Ernst Zimmermann, Meissner Porzellan, Leipzig, 1926, p. 183, fig. 52.
