Without a doubt, one of the most exciting releases of 2021 was the Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon wristwatch. It was the brand's first 'superhero' timepiece to emerge as a result of their then-new collaboration with Marvel Entertainment.
In early 2021, rumors amongst watch collectors and American comic book fans turned to excitement when a promotional teaser video featuring then-Audemars Piguet's CEO, François-Henri Bennahmias and actor Don Cheadle appeared online. Shortly after, it was announced that the two companies had officially collaborated to create the first in a proposed series of ‘superhero’ watches. Shortly later in April of that year, the brand's hosted a celebrational launch party in which a unique white gold version was auctioned off for charity and reached a staggering $5.2 million dollars, setting the precedent for this bold wristwatch. In fact, the watch was the most expensive Audemars Piguet timepiece ever sold.
Guests of this exclusive launch party included international celebrities such as Kevin Hart, Serena Williams, and LeBron James. Furthermore decorating the event as well as Audemars Piguet boutiques, the Maison created a limited edition of Black Panther statues made by renowned manufacture Beast Kingdom, such as the present lot which is numbered '013'.
