Shields said to be from the Mapi or Awyu typically have a leaf-like form and are pointed at the bottom. While the central motif of a zig zag line can be found on shields of both the Citak Asmat or the Mappi (see Craig, B. et al., Shields of Melanesia, Honolulu, 2005, pp. 154-165), it seems to be rather typical of the Awyu the use of the doublespiral motif. This has been amply used in our case making this shield particularly interesting and rare. The complexity and refinement of the design indicates to the work’s age, comparable to some of the works cited by Craig, B., ibid., pp. 163 and 164, no. 6.11 and 6.12, that were acquired between 1916 and 1927.
