Macabre: Fantasized by Benjamin Spiers
Sale Overview
From the grim and eerily strange to the distorted and fascinatingly dark, this spellbinding selling exhibition examines the artistic treatment of the macabre through the ages. Co-curated with the artist Benjamin Spiers, Macabre places fantastical relics of bygone centuries alongside cutting-edge creations of today. From Bosch to Burra, Rodin to Rego, a cross-section of uncanny artistic production is traced through a range of media. A memorable selling exhibition in both scope and spirit, Macabre offers viewers and collectors the opportunity to consider how these diverse works contrast with and speak to one another, offering a rounded dialogue on mankind’s collective fascination with the curious, peculiar and mysterious.
Benjamin Spiers (b. 1972) studied at Falmouth University and Goldsmiths. His paintings pair methodical skills, with a mastery of styles that include surrealism, abstraction and cubism, bringing alive a world of hypnagogic fears and fantasies to his canvases. Benjamin Spiers is represented by Saatchi Yates.
