Lot Essay

This Hanukkah lamp belongs to the group commonly referred to as Baal Shem Tov lamps, widespread in 19th-century Eastern Europe and strongly associated with Chasidic tradition. While not contemporary with the Baal Shem Tov (d. 1760), such pieces were preserved and faithfully reproduced within Chasidic dynasties. The inscription emphasizing the ritual commandment, together with the bird finial and filigree decoration, highlight both the devotional and symbolic character of the lamp.
